Orthokeratology (Ortho-K)
If you've imagined enjoying your daytime activities without the inconvenience of glasses or contact lenses, but have concerns about corrective refractive surgery such as LASIK, or have been told you are not a good candidate for the surgery, then you definitely want to find out more about Orthokeratology.
In addition to eliminating the need for contact lenses or eye glasses, Ortho-K also retards the progression of myopia in children or teenagers so progressively thicker glasses may not be need later in life.
For more detailed information about Ortho-K, read Dr. Wieand's: Patient's Guide to Orthokeratology.
How Ortho-K Works
Simply wear the custom designed Ortho-K lenses every night (or for some every other night) and remove them in the morning. While you sleep, the lenses gently reshape your cornea to correct and improve near-sightedness (up to -5.00) and astigmatism (up to -1.25). Within two to five days most people are able to enjoy functional daytime visual activity without correction. There are several individual factors that may influence the speed and degree of corneal molding so the perfect success cannot be guaranteed.
Most people are able to see better without correction within 2-5 days!
The Process
Simply A comprehensive eye examination and topographical corneal maps and measurements must be performed to determine if you are a good candidate for Ortho-K before custom lenses can be ordered. If you then begin the Ortho-K program the fee includes any contacts necessary and six months of follow-up care. A dispensing appointment is set up in which the doctor or technician will give the patient instructions on how to handle, insert and remove the contact lenses. Lens fit, vision and corneal maps are evaluated every visit.
